My Most Elegant Reason

You shadow me with consequence

You light my cigarette

I draw you down into my chest

Like an atmosphere of regret

And we walk although we’re headed for two different places

Duplicity is most at home in lovers’ faces

You knew just how much harm it could do

But a kiss is a bastard that plays by its own rules

It seems like a joke that went frightfully wrong

That fell to the ground like wrought-iron clouds

Will you listen again in this quieter season

To my very last, most elegant reason?

So you think you’ve heard it all before

But there are things I’ve never said

About the dreams we tread lightly on

And the daggers under our bed

But it’s true that I loved you for all of your danger

And for the way you still look at me as some kind of stranger

A poor excuse for poetry I suppose

But can you forgive a thorn that’s been pricked by a rose?

If words will fail me it’s all I deserve

I’ve lost all I had except for the nerve

To call to the stand in this trial for treason

My very last, most elegant reason
