Nueva Vida

Neither one of us breaks the silence

As the odometer clicks ever over

And disappointment is its own kind of violence

Look for an out, or at least an exit

Gas, food, lodging, Nueva Vida, Nevada

We didn’t make it as far as we planned

Out of gas on a full tank

Bravely homing in on the free of the land

Before the road gave out – exhausted

In a place called Nueva Vida, Nevada

Feel like nothing could go right tonight

Even if there were no lefts left

We were driving for forever

But now the end of the road is in sight

The night won’t go gentle into that good dawn

And the morning sun is a shy one

As it tip-toes across the lawn

Of the motel of my last stand

Here in beautiful Nueva Vida, Nevada

She got us breakfast while I slept in

No one’s heart should be broken on an empty stomach

As empty as the bed her dreams were kept in

Wheeling west into a cool desert breeze

I left her to pay the bill

I left her pillows and I left her dreams

And a new place to lay her head

A destination called Nueva Vida

Let her have those miles

she can’t have these

I took it better than she thought

I took my leave and I took the keys and I took one last look around

You’re now leaving Nueva Vida, Nevada
